The indictment against former President Donald Trump charges him with 34 criminal counts of falsifying business records and conspiracy in connection with hush money payments to two women before the 2016 presidential election.

The indictment says those payments aimed to suppress claims by those women of having sex with Trump, in order to avoid those accounts harming his chances of winning the election over Hillary Clinton.

A Manhattan Supreme Court grand jury indicted Trump on Thursday after hearing testimony for several months about a hush money payment to porn star Stormy Daniels.

Trump separately is under criminal investigation by the Department of Justice and a state prosecutor in Georgia for efforts to reverse his 2020 election loss to President Joe Biden.

The charging document was unsealed at his arraignment in Manhattan Supreme Court, where a prosecutor said Trump's crimes had undermined the 2016 election.

"Not guilty," Trump told Judge Juan Merchan.

There are two women previously known to have received hush money payments in 2016 to buy their silence about Trump.

One was the porn star Stormy Daniels, who received $130,000 from Trump's then-lawyer and fixer Michael Cohen at Trump's direction.

The other was Playboy model Karen McDougal, who received $150,000 from the publisher of The National Enquirer, the supermarket tabloid that was allied with Trump.

Next hearing will be in December with the trial likely to start in January 2024.
The judge ordered that no video cameras or cellphones will be allowed inside the courtroom.

Even Mitt Romney, who is no fan of Trump, says the charges are "over-reaching and politically charged"...

Yeah, who could think that politicians could over reach and be politically motivated?

Aren't they still trying to pin charges on Biden due to his son? And I am fairly certain for YEARS conservatives were harping on Benghazi.

Yeah, it's just AWFUL when politicians use an issue for political gain, right?

The DA of NYC is going to waste $ millions of tax-payers money on a $140,000 hush settlement which doesn't make any sense, while an investigation of the Secretary of State was necessary because several Americans died in Benghazi.

Murder will always be a more serious crime than hush money, murderers are running free in NYC and so are negligent politicians.

Benghazi embassy was Obama's responsibility and needed to be investigated as to why it happened.  People died there! Benghazi could have been prevented had Obama paid attention to and responded to reports prior to the attack.

It's as if you have no idea that Stormy's defamation suit never had anything to do with the current criminal indictment against Trump.

"Under New York state law, it is a felony to falsify business records with intent to defraud and intent to conceal another crime," Bragg said in a news conference later Tuesday. "That is exactly what this case is about. Thirty-four false statements made to cover up other crimes. These are felony crimes in New York no matter who you are."

Outside the courthouse, the number of reporters covering the event outnumbered those who came to protest the arrest of the twice-impeached former president. The dozens of Trump supporters who did show up were met with counter protestors, and both groups were separated by police barriers.

Mitt Romney is a spoiled, entitled Mormon patriarch who only cares about himself (has no backbone since he is not made accountable like Utah Governor who is duly entitled).  You know it's the patriarch thingy that the cult takes very serious.  Mitt is trying to save his own ass and anything out of his mouth needs a gag order.

Funny, conservatives are willing to throw MILLIONS at getting illegal aliens who are paying TAXES to the US for the jobs they have thrown out of the country which doesn't make any sense, but when someone is breaking THIRTY-FOUR laws, all of a sudden DA's are wasting money...

How do illegals pay income taxes if they don't have a Soc Sec card or Tax ID?
If they don't have one they can't legally work in the US, if they use a phony Tax ID then that's also illegal.

I know falsifying an I-9 form is a serious crime because I've worked in HR and hired many people. Not only that but entering the US without a passport or VISA is also a crime.

Oh but they do and I'm sure Trump's defense will bring it up in court during the trial...that is if the prosecution doesn't object and the judge allows it. Trump's lawyers will also bring up the fact that the statute of limitations has expired.

They pay them very well:

And again, you think that what illegal aliens do is VERY illegal, but want to dismiss the 34 things Trump is charged with.

I mean, Trump does have a history of hiring stupid lawyers, but the lawyers thus far defending him in this criminal case don't seem like complete morons.
