If they had a strong case they wouldn't have settled and could of got twice the amount(or more) had they won.
Besides the appeals there's also the matter of what they were asking, the company isn't worth $1.6 billion. It's only worth $80 million:

The difference is this award is THEIRS. No having it locked up in appeals or counter claims or reduced in some way. Even if it wasn't as much as they wanted, it's still going to hurt and with Smartmatic all queued up and ready to do the same thing it's a smart move.
