Quote from: Blkfyre on Jun 27, 2023, 02:42 PMA good number of Republicans are descended from/had ties to people who were in the KKK. What does that have to do with the person now? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ku_Klux_Klan_members_in_United_States_politics

What does something that happened 200 years ago have to do with today?

Republicans are quick to say "Stop judging Trump on the past" and yet THIS comes up? Sigh, hypocrisy thy name is Republicans...
Right? Ace?

Look at all the Democrats whose ancestors owned slaves. Biden and Obama are on the list, does Obama have to pay reparations to himself? lol

Quote from: Romanticlover on Jun 27, 2023, 03:23 PMThe KKK was founded by southern Democrats, nice try though.

Have you heard of Sen. Robert Byrd(D-WV)?

Quote from: bats on Jun 27, 2023, 04:15 PMSure, let's completely ignore the well-established history of the Democratic Party and just pretend that the old Southern Democrats didn't form the base of today's Republicans. It's such common knowledge that I don't even have to provide the sources for this information.

Still, every so often some right-winger spouts this nonsense, apparently under the mistaken impression that they're making a valid point.

Quote from: Romanticlover on Jun 27, 2023, 05:34 PMIt's not nonsense, Sen Robert Byrd is a valid point.
He was given a eulogy by Hillary Clinton and Joe Biden at his funeral, they said he was a great friend and mentor.
Since when is a member of the KKK a great mentor?

What is your obsession with Robert Byrd?  You keep bring him up.

I guess you don't fully read the articles that you quote and link.

NAACP Praises Byrd
In the end, the political legacy of Robert Byrd went from admitting his former membership in the Ku Klux Klan to winning the accolades of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP). The group rated the senator's voting record as being 100% in line with their positions during the 203-2004 congressional session.

In June 2005, Byrd sponsored a bill allocating an additional $10 million in federal funds for the Martin Luther King, Jr. National Memorial in Washington, D.C.

When Byrd died at age 92 on June 28, 2010, the NAACP released a statement saying that over the course of his life he "became a champion for civil rights and liberties" and "came to consistently support the NAACP civil rights agenda."

I keep bringing up Robert Byrd because he was a Democrat and a member of the KKK, he also opposed the civil rights act. The only reason the NAACP praised him was because he was a Democrat, had he been a Republican they would of loathed him. Democrats seem to love racists and segregationists, George Wallace ran on the Democrat ticket because the Republicans wouldn't have him.

There I mentioned someone else, are you happy HS?

Fun fact: MLK Jr was a Republican but you won't read about that in school text books because it doesn't follow the leftist ideology.

"Segregation now, segregation tomorrow, segregation forever." George Wallace
Wallace adopted a hard-line segregationist stance after losing the 1958 nomination. The way the story goes is that Wallace said he was out "N" by his opponent and the he would never be out "N" again.

Wallace made an unpublicized and unannounced Sunday morning visit to a black church.
"I think I can understand something of the pain black people have come to endure. I know I contributed to that pain, and I can only ask your forgiveness." Link

Wallace and Byrd found forgiveness.
"forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us."
It is a crazy Christian thing. I don't expect you to buy into it.

King stated, "I don't think the Republican Party is a party full of the almighty God, nor is the Democratic Party. They both have weaknesses. And I'm not inextricably bound to either party." What's more, the parties of King's time were different from the parties we know today; policies and platforms have changed drastically over time. Link

Fun fact, Ronald Reagan, after winning the Republican nomination, kicked off his campaign in Mississippi with a states' rights speech to court Wallace supporters.

Quote from: Romanticlover on Jun 28, 2023, 06:19 PMFun fact: Wallace was from Alabama.

Not a "fun" fact, it is a known fact.

George Wallace in his presidential campaign won 9,901,118 popular votes (out of a total of 73,199,998)—that is, 13.53% of votes cast nationally. So, he had supporters outside of Alabama.

IMO We are not responsible for what our ancestors may have done or not done back in the day. Its just the way it was and can never be changed or set right. Its part of our history. So dont let others make you think that you are responsible or owe anything. What we are responsible for is to insure everyone is treated as equals with equal rights and opportunities, each american citizen is important!
