Reportedly, the Democrats offered to work with the Republicans to elect a speaker who met two basic requirements. First, the new speaker couldn't be some right-wing nutcase who believed (or at least took the public position) that the 2020 election was stolen. Second, the Democrats wanted a speaker who would agree to bring to the floor for an up-or-down vote issues with broad bipartisan support.

But since Trump and his anti-democracy base control the Republicans, they couldn't come up with anyone who met those basic tests. Thus, we have Mike Johnson, the least experienced speaker in over 100 years.

Blaming Democrats here is like taking the fire department to task for being unable to extinguish a fire after public works cut off the water supply.
