I am questioning the state setting a minimum wage for specific work is it unconstitutional?  In general food workers are in a non skill job that can be learned while working where as many skilled jobs require school and training have the state minimum wage. I just don't think it's fair opportunity to set a higher minimum wage for specific work.  Has any employers sued the state over this minimum wage for food workers?

Some of the wages being paid in the food industry is crazy.

My neighbor is 26 YO and is a Manger for Panda and he is earning over six figures.

Food industry workers are earning more than teachers, and the entry level engineer position at Caltrans.

Well that's life.  You can complain but what can actually be done about it?  No one here is the Gov, a legislator, etc.

Do you know why prices are going up so much/automation going into restaurants?

Because restaurants weren't paying their workers a living wage. And, despite what people believe, yes, working at a restaurant, even a fast food restaurant is an actual career for some people.

Fast food workers getting a pay bump shouldn't have hit so hard, except that restaurants were banking on under paying their workers while still pocketing those profits, and now, to keep the profits up, they have to raise prices/automate.

Not because it costs that much, but because they want to keep raking in the money for their shareholders:

McDonald's annual gross profit for 2023 was $14.563B, a 10.26% increase from 2022.
McDonald's annual gross profit for 2022 was $13.207B, a 4.98% increase from 2021.
McDonald's annual gross profit for 2021 was $12.58B, a 29% increase from 2020.

Stop blaming the workers for getting paid what they should, and start blaming the restaurants who put them and us in this situation...

My problem is the Democrats did this to pander to a certain group of unskilled labor, you can't have a minimum wage for one job and another for everyone else. The result is higher fast food prices and restaurants closing, several fast food joints have closed in my neighborhood since the law went into effect.

What good is $20/hr if you don't have a job?
Are we having fun yet?

I agree with Romanticlover.  We should have a statewide minimum wage that is realistic but low. Hiking certain industries minimum wages just causes inflation in that industry and causes people (consumers) to move away from that industry.

Minimum wages should be entry level jobs. People start there, gain experience and strive to move upward to better paying jobs. It's a free market, if you don't like your current wage, take your skills and move to a job that pays better or has more opportunity to move upward.

I worked two low paying part time jobs, 45 hrs a week 7 days a week, while going through college.  I know it can be done. I didn't expect the PT jobs to support me the rest of my life. They were a stepping stone to move forward.   Having government trying to make entry level jobs a long term career living wage just fuels inflation and hurts the overall economic health of an industry.

I don't eat at fast food.  Therefore I don't care.  They can pay them $100/hr.

Danno

the only ones getting $20/hr are working at a cooperate owned, which are very few.

Idk, that's like saying, I don't rent hotel rooms, they can cost $1000 a night.  I hear those South American babes just love big whopper's. When Whoppers go up $2, rates go up $200.   We always end up paying...

I totally disagree with you.  People as kids don't say when I grow up I want to be a food worker. Workers in food industry was never a career rather part time jobs for kids after school.  If the employee doesn't like their pay they can find a better job that pays more.  We don't want the state dictating wages.

I do not participate in the street scene, but occasionally will go to Carl's Jr on Watt to watch the action.

Last hamburger, a Western Bacon Cheese Burger was $11.

11$ for a hamburger isn't that something!  Food workers got a huge pay raise and the restaurants raised their prices. Getting so only rich people can eat out.  So food workers get pay raise and everyone pays for it.  The state should look for ways for business to reduce cost not cause them to increase costs...
