Jamelle Bouie, a columnist for the New York Times, recently wrote about the potential changes that could happen now that Trump has been elected to a second term. He took a historical view to help explain what's going on.

If you're interested, you can read the whole column for free. The Times has a policy of letting subscribers "gift" a certain number of articles to people who don't have a subscription.

Social security act.
Suppose to restore full benefits to people that worked for the government.
All on board to pass it.
Nope, shot down last night by the House.

I used the link provide, but must have hit some wrong button and kept being directed to the subscription only options. I used another browser to get a free option by providing an email and creating a password.
I created a reading thread for those that may have trouble accessing the New York Times.

We hear it said, "this is not your father's Oldsmobile" "This is not your father's razor" so it this is not your forefather's country. There have been several American Republics. Interesting analysis of the changes that could be coming to "Our" Republic.

Thanks. That was the first time I've ever tried using that feature. Maybe it's still in beta. lol

This was said in 2016. American Democracy did not end. This was repeated in 2020. American Democracy did not end. Why do both sides act like it's the end of the world just because their party is no longer lord of the castle?

What was said in 2016? Nowhere in this thread or the referenced column did anyone say American Democracy would end.

What I see happening is our National Debt will skyrocket like we have never experienced even compared to World War 2  Taxes will be cut but spending will go through the roof at the same time.  Wall Street will boom.  Income will grow. Tons of people will become wealthy!   Sounds good, right?  Everyone dancing in the streets!!

But, but, but.    I'll be long dead as will most of us, when that HUGE National Debt destroys our economy and the US dollar. Our kids and grandkids will look back and say, Trump did what he always does, He was the master of running up debt and filing bankrupcy.  Sadly, that business will be the USA this time.   He started this process during his first term but will be more aggressive this time.  The fiscal Conservatives will try to stop the growth in debt but will be buried by Trump and the spenders.
We all got two lives, the second one begins when you realize you only have one.

The HUGE debt created by this Administration will be a undertaking...

Donald Trump from 2017 to its end in 2021, the national debt increased by 40.43%, about $8.18 trillion.

Under Biden national debt has grown by about $6.17 trillion, or 21.7%, since he  was inaugurated in 2021.

Yes, during Trump's victory speech he said he was going to bring down the National Debt.(the guy who ran up the biggest debt) We should learn to not put stock in what Trump says, but to look at what he actually does.

It was "shot down," but it's not dead yet. It has bipartisan support in the House, so the stunt Tuesday night by a couple of Freedumb Caucus members could be temporary.
