Yes Johnson was a real piece of work.  He lied to the American people saying how well the US was doing in Vietnam.  Johnson was a racist for sure.  Times were much different when Wilson was president.  It is unfair to judge a president from over 100 years ago by today's standards. 

And similarly, using a president from over 100 years ago to justify doing the wrong they did wouldn't fly by today's standards either.

Johnson with his Southern accent had difficulty pronouncing "Negro." Yet, he did more than JFK or any president since Lincoln when it came to Civil Rights for black people. His record was, very good for a Southern politician in his era. Early in his career, LBJ had been a quiet integrationist as the head of a National Youth Administration program. Johnson was one of only two Southern senators to refuse to sign the Southern Manifesto in 1956. Johnson guided the passage of the first civil rights bill since Reconstruction in 1957.

On July 2, 1964, President Lyndon B. Johnson signed the historic Civil Rights Act into law. He had use a lot of his political capital to get it through Congress. There were significant political repercussions. Many Southern Democrats, who were opposed to the civil rights legislation, began to shift their allegiance to the Republican Party.
