Military culture and the newbie and his family

My brother went to basic training... He didn't seem to think it was a big deal. Neither did we, his family. I did not know at the time. My brother enjoyed boot camp. They didn't throw at him anything he could not handle.
As a college graduate, I didn't "do" basic. I did "OCS". I was singled out in the first week, as one of fifteen, out of over 400, who could actually swim. We fifteen got to sleep in while everyone else went to swimming lessons. First in line -- EVERYWHERE! I have gone off track. This story is about an 18yr old that left today for Marine boot camp. His mother is both very proud and crying her eyes out. I think the kid made the right choice for him. He is a smart kid and he will do well.
Having now seen many military milestones, I know graduating from boot camp is a big deal. I am encouraging his family to be there.

I remember basic training well. Continued to use the training on marching years later.
Before Covid I use to march with the American Legion in Veterans' Day Parades.

military is to be respected. leadership and pronouns et.al. cause me a little consternation these days. I didn't serve.
