The federal grand jury hearing evidence in special counsel Jack Smith's investigation into efforts by former President Donald Trump and his allies to overturn the 2020 election handed up an indictment Tuesday in the courthouse in Washington, DC.

Smith has been looking into Trump's efforts to remain in office following his 2020 election defeat to Joe Biden, including the deadly 6 January 2021 riot in which his supporters overran the Capitol building in Washington DC.

A judge agreed to seal the indictment, and there was no information given in court about the number of defendants or the identity of any defendant. The judge also approved a summons for the unidentified defendant or defendants to appear in court.

Trump is already facing criminal charges in Florida for illegally hoarding classified documents from his presidency, and prosecution in New York for a hush-money payment to an adult movie star. He is also expected to face state charges in Georgia over Trump's efforts there to reverse his defeat to Biden in the 2020 election.

In something that surprises nobody, even with all that, Trump currently leads in polling for the 2024 Republican presidential nomination by a wide margin.

Trump indicted with six co-conspirators.
Keep in mind that Trump was impeached for these criminal activities. The Senate reasoning to not convict was that he was leaving the Presidency. The Senate advised that these activities could be addressed through other processes, i.e criminal prosecution.

An independent career prosecutor base on the votes of American Citizens (Grand Jury) is bringing the indictment.

Conspiracy is broader than just January 6th.
  • In seven states Trump participated in election fraud by putting forth fake electors.
  • Trump tried to get an official at the Justice Department to send out letters to the states that there was widespread election fraud.
  • Trump tried to get the Vice President Mike Pence to do something illegal, while he was presiding over the Electoral College results, Trump's actions created a threat of violence so severe that the Vice President's Chief of Staff alerted the Secret Service protecting the Vice President.
  • The indictment is NOT saying Trump was the sole cause of the violence, but that trump and his co-conspirators tried to exploit the violence in an ongoing effort to overturn the results of the election

Update: The indictment has been unsealed:

Trump has been charged with four counts:

Conspiracy to defraud the United States "by using dishonesty, fraud and deceit to obstruct the nation's process of collecting, counting, and certifying the results of the presidential election";
Conspiracy to impede the Jan. 6 congressional proceeding;
Conspiracy against the right to vote and to have that vote counted;
Obstruction of, and attempt to obstruct and impede, the certification of the electoral vote.

"Pence addressed this point in his statement Tuesday, saying: "On January 6th, former President Trump demanded that I choose between him and the Constitution. I chose the Constitution, and I always will.""

My question (that I can post here) is: Teflon Don or Gone Don?

Are you asking for predictions? What would be the point?

Well bats......you and certain (super obvious) others here are clearly on one side.....that doesn't mean everyone is or that I am either.....but why not let everyone have a chance to voice their opinion instead of railroading them into your singular point of view?  Get it?

dogwalker, you're attributing to me more power than I have if you think I'm "railroading" anyone into a point of view.

But on the question of Trump, while I well understand that he and his allies in both politics and right-wing media are beating the dishonest drum of selective prosecution by the Biden DOJ, enough of the facts in this case have been in plain sight for so long that anyone who has any doubt about his guilt is either (a) completely uninformed, (b) a fool, or (c) a partisan liar.

We've already seen much of the evidence thanks to the second impeachment trial and the January 6 committee hearings. But now we will hear testimony from Trump's buffoonish henchmen, who prosecutors are properly squeezing.

Still, as with the prior inquiries into Trump's misconduct, a good 1/3 of the population either doesn't care or doesn't believe it. They'd rather have fascism, apparently, because that's what we'll get if that prick gets re-elected and can remain in office despite his likely convictions.

Judges, juries, and prosecutors have to presume the fucker innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law, but here in the Saloon, it's okay to draw conclusions before all of that plays out.

Blkfyre created this discussion thread on the current indictment of Donald Trump. There was no point in "stepping" on his thread by creating another discussion thread. This exact same approach was used for the Classified Documents Indictment. https://fantasysaloon.com/index.php?msg=13256

If you have something to contribute or an opinion you want discussed feel free to post here in the thread started by Blkfyre.

So what you are saying is that if re-elected Trump will not respect the rule of law, trampling the Constitution-granted powers of the Judicial branch of government's area of responsibility for those lawfully convicted huh? And that conservatives are ok with that? Sounds more like a dictatorship than a republic to me.

No, some people genuinely believe that Trump is the victim of witch hunts and hoaxes by those who dislike him for being brash and unconventional. Those people wouldn't see pardons as trampling on the powers of the judicial branch but rather righting wrongs committed against the man who they believe speaks for them.

3 indictments, 78 charges total.  Hundreds of years of prison time if convicted and given the maximum sentence.
Is that useful information?

Can't wait for McCarthy to take the witness stand and they ask him why he called Trump during the Jan 6th attack on America. He already testified that he called him because he caused this and stop it now.
