The appointing Justices to the Supreme Court is a constitutional power that presidents has, that cannot be undone by future presidents or by Congress. Given how the political pendulum swings back and forth, in four years there could be a Democrat in the White House and a Democratic controlled Senate. Six years from now before the Mid Term Election they could still be in control if not eight years from now.

Now, Clarence Thomas is 76 years old (born June 23, 1948) and Samuel Alit is 74 years old (born April 1, 1950) When Democrats are in controlled they could be 84 and 82 respectively.

For at least two years Trump will hold sway over who gets appointed to The Court. His previous appointments average 55 in age. Two more appointments of similar age, would firmly established the conservative bent of the court for the next 30 years. Thomas & Alito have been branded as scandalous scoundrels with talk of impeachment (won't happen with a Republican Senate). Strategically this would be a good time for them to retire. One would think that they have feed at the political trough long enough to have gotten full.
Too much sex is still not enough.

I'd prefer they hang on for about 4.5 years.
